Planner Spotlight: Gordon’s consumption tracker

I love getting a peek at other people’s planners and one of my favorite things are Yoseka Stationery’s planner update videos where they have their super talented team members do a techo kaigi.

In their half year update Gordon showed us the Plotter he’s using as his planner and one particular spread at 22:28 caught my eye: he keeps a “consumption” list.

It sounds like he has multiple uses for this list, all with the goal of being more conscious/intentional about what he buys. He logs major purchases and also keeps a wishlist that he refers to, to see if his desires are fleeting or if he should get them when he wants to spend the money.

At the end of the year he looks back at the list to evaluate how the purchases he made affected him, and uses these insights to inform his purchases the following year.

I also keep a wishlist for a similar reason, and recommend the practice. I know I can be susceptible to suddenly wanting to buy something badly and not knowing if it’s only in that moment or if the feeling will pass. Keeping a list makes me feel less anxiety about making a decision on the spot, and when I go back later it’s apparent if I don’t feel that excitement anymore.

Another benefit for me is, when I feel tempted to buy something, I can look back to the wishlist to see if I really want that thing MORE than all these other awesome things I could be spending the money on instead. If there’s something I want more that I resisted, it’s helpful to have the reminder.
